Very good and extremely usable example of a classic 5" Joseph Dixon plough gauge.
A beautiful tool in good working condition with years of work left in it. Nicely turned and figured hardwood handle with brass band. Knife is in good condition and very sharp. Adjustment lever works smoothly. Roller is nylon.
Slight pitting of metalwork commensurate with age - estimated to be 1930s/1940s
All in all, a good workmanlike tool with both the knife and body of plough gauge stamped for J Dixon of Walsall.
Ready for some really hard work. Nice tool.
A brief note about Plough Gauges:
A plough gauge is used to cut leather straps. It is easily
adjustable to cut different strap widths - generally up to 5" or 6" depending on
the length of the adjustment bar (which is engraved with a ruler so
measurements are accurate). Top makes are Dixons of Walsall (Thomas
Dixon & Sons & Joseph Dixon are my personal favorites) and Geo
Barnsley. Gauges have been made by various companies over the years and
most will work very well - All my plough gauges are ready for work. I
only sell usable tools not show pieces although many seem to end up
in collections!
