It isn't complicated folks: I make proper old fashioned terrier collars and good strong leads. They don't break, the solid brass buckles, rivets and clips don't rust and they last for years.
A tough, hardwearing and easy to maintain terrier collar makes sense, so I use high quality leather that can be washed in cold water, dried, oiled (try neatsfoot oil) and put straight back on the dog. I then add a quality brass buckle and fittings so nothing rusts. The end result is an old fashioned dog collar that will last for years. I think that's what you are looking for!
